Friday was my birthday. It was a pretty fine day.

On Christmas Eve we went to P&K’s house, along with 11 others, for dinner. I took a chocolate fruitcake. Below is the recipe, which comes directly from this book: Wicked Sweet Indulgences (”Australian Women’s Weekly” Home Library). I actually bought the book from Waterstone’s in Amsterdam several years ago. It’s FULL of amazing desserts, [...] This morning we all woke up to see snow covering the ground. White Christmas? When was the last time there was a white Christmas in the Netherlands? I don’t know, but quite a few years anyway. Above you see the little bear in the window, welcoming the snow and any visitors who might come by [...] What do most Americans do on Thanksgiving Day? Eat and watch football, that’s what. We don’t have Thanksgiving here in the Netherlands. The Dutch don’t know much about Thanksgiving actually. I overheard a colleague of mine (Dutch) talking on the phone with another colleague who happened to be working in Australia. My colleague asked the [...] Who are these people? They just kept coming up to our table and sitting down! :-) It’s once again November 11 and once again kids are going door to door singing Sint-Maarten songs, carrying their hand made lamps and expecting candy and treats in return. It’s a much sweeter and gentler holiday than Halloween. There are no scary costumes or decorations for this Dutch trick or treating. Just nice songs about [...] Look what opened today at the Amsterdam Central Station! Finally. Before today the only place you could get a Starbucks coffee was at Schiphol Airport (since 2 years ago) or at Nike HQ in Hilversum (since 1 year ago). Some people have been to the dunes in North Holland many times without ever seeing the wild horses or the cattle. I saw both again today. The horses were standing all around the bike path, and in the end 3 of them were standing right on the bike path so you had to go around [...] Six weeks ago DB and I were in Paris for my long birthday weekend. If you were reading the blog back then, you know that we both got sick and I spent one of those precious days laying in bed not able to move. I had a bad taste in my mouth over Paris. We [...] Yes, last Thursday was my birthday. It wasn’t such a big day since I had to work. Working on your birthday should be illegal. There should be a national holiday every day for each person’s birthday. |
