My blog had a meltdown and I’ve spent the last 3 hours working to get it back up and running.

What happened?  My web host (A Small Orange) upgraded their database software and my old version of WordPress and my Theme were not compatible with this upgrade.  First of all, I highly recommend A Small Orange as a web host.  I can send them help requests any time of day or night and I get a reply in a matter of minutes.  You can’t ask for more than that!

Second, I should have kept my software up to date.  If I had, this would not have happened.  My bad.

Now I have a new theme and upgraded software.  I’ll probably spend the next days tweaking the theme and writing some posts about our last week in California.  Change is good!  I like this new theme.  It looks fresh and clean and I’m ready for that.

Check back soon for new news!

This morning DB and I went running on the beach.  Yes, you heard me right.  RUNNING.  OK, it wasn’t a lot of running, but still.  We did  (1 min run, 2 min walk) x 5.  My knee, and the rest of me, felt great.  The only thing that kept me from doing more was some sense of caution and also this nagging cold that just won’t go away.  I’m still coughing crud from my lungs and my nose is still red from blowing it constantly.  I figured some cold salt air would do me good.  It certainly wouldn’t do me any harm.  The plan now is to increase this routine so that next week I’ll do (2 min run, 2 min walk) x 5.  And so on from there.  I don’t go back to the physical therapist for 3 weeks.

The above photo was not taken today.  I didn’t take any photos today.  But the skies looked about like this and there were about this many people around.  I would have taken a photo with my iPhone except that it takes really lousy photos.  I was talking to DB this morning about phones.  Since I was one of those people camped out in front of T-Mobile nearly 2 years ago to get my iPhone, my 2 year contract is nearly up.  Will I go for the new iPhone this summer?  Or get a Blackberry?  I can’t see myself with an Android phone somehow.  But why not a Blackberry?  What do I actually use my iPhone for?  Not nearly what it is capable of, that’s what.

I have to say, though, that the iPhone is my favorite mobile phone ever.  I’m pretty picky when it comes to phones.  I’m never satisfied.  The iPhone has been the best so far.  The interface is great, the screen is beautiful, the speed is just acceptable, it plays music and video, shows me when the trains will be late, when it will rain, educates and entertains.  What more do you want?  A decent camera and a keyboard, that’s what.  I miss a keyboard I can really type on.  And I miss a decent camera on a phone.  You know what?  If this thing had a decent camera, and a keyboard, I would blog more often.  I would take a photo, write some snappy text, and use the WordPress app to get it here in a jif.  My iPhone has become my excuse for NOT blogging?  That’s pretty pathetic!

What do you think of the iPad?  Laying in bed yesterday morning, finishing reading “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, DB said I’d be the perfect candidate for an eBook reader.  He’s always teasing me about the space my books take up.  I said, “sure, buy me an iPad for my birthday.”  I’m not completely convinced though.  I’m sitting here writing this on my trusty MBP and wouldn’t have it any other way.  Spending 500 bucks on a glorified book reader and movie player is something I just can’t justify right now.  We have enough toys and besides I’m just not sure I’d really use it.  What do you think?  Are you buying one?

Oh yeah!  Speaking of toys…. a guy sitting with us a Vapiano Friday night mentioned you can buy original VW bugs here, well restored, for around 10,000 euros.  Or less.  Oh man.  My first car was a ’68 VW Bug.  Would I want one again?  It has a certain appeal…..

Well here we are on the 4th of December and I’m only now getting around to congratulating myself on NaBloPoMo ’09.  Yes, I managed 30 posts in the 30 days of November.  Posting every day is very challenging.  It was not easy.  I made it!

Posting every day takes determination and stubbornness and only just a little bit of creativity.  I nearly always have something to say, but it takes discipline to sit down and write it.

This is the second year I’ve participated in NaBloPoMo and I’m sure I’ll do it again next year.  It’s really a kick in the ol’ blogging butt that I need sometimes.

You will notice, however, that as soon as November was over I took 3 days off from blogging.  It’s been a busy week at work and I came home late every night.  Even today, Friday, I was at work early, ate lunch at my desk, and didn’t leave until after 6pm.  Ugh.  And I have to do some more work over the weekend.

We did take a little time for fun this afternoon.  We played this geography game.  It’s addicting.  Give it a try!

This blog runs on WordPress.  WordPress.org that is, meaning that I’m hosted by a company of my choice and I have total control over all my files.  This is not the same as Blogger or even WordPress.com.

Since this is a new computer (brought back from the U.S., saving me a load of money), I still have to install a “sand box” WordPress on this computer.  Those helpful people at apache friends have created xampp, which is an automatic install of MySQL, PHP and Perl.  When that is done I can install WordPress on my laptop and simulate an internet blog on my own laptop.  That way, you can experiment and try different things with your blog and no one will see it until you replicate these changes on your real blog, hosted and open to the world.

I want to try some things to make this a more interesting blog.  Maybe a survey.  Maybe something more interesting on the side bars.  At a minimum I will clean up the links you see on the left of the page since the list is very outdated.  Some of those blogs are not updated by their owners anymore.  They are orphans.  So sad.

I hope you will enjoy the upcoming changes.  Stay tuned.

Oh, by the way, remember a couple of weeks ago I told you about the photographer who wanted to come take my photo in my home, of me knitting?  She came today and took my photo.  Lots of photos.  She was so friendly, and open, and really a pleasure to have in my house.  She will email a photo or 2 to me when they are done, and I have the a-ok to post them on the blog.  So I will.

It was a lovely month off from blogging. I really needed it.  I feel like my blogging mojo is on the way back.  Aren’t you glad?

So, what have I been up to since we last met?  Lots of things!  I have several FO’s to report, new things in progress, lots of wedding photos and vacation photos to share, and observations to make.

Since I have so much stored up to tell you about, it seemed a good time to take advantage of NaBloPoMo or National Blog Posting Month.  The idea is to sign up and post something to your blog every day this month.  It’s 1 November.  Here I go.

The above photo was taken at Mandy and John’s wedding on 17 October.  It was really the best wedding ever.  The day was planned by them, with everything the way they really wanted it.  Considering the teeny tiny budget they had, it was just amazing.  They originally wanted to invite EVERYONE, but the list was just too long, so they had to make hard choices in order to keep it small enough but big enough and include what they really wanted to have.  For example, instead of a wedding cake, we made cookies on Thursday night to serve instead.  John’s Mom did all the flower arrangements.  A friend took photos (along with the rest of us).

I’ll have more to say about the wedding, and photos to share, in a later post.  But it was really the best part of the vacation so I wanted to start out the month with this highlight.  Love you guys!

Everyone needs a holiday, even from blogging.

Blogging should be fun, or at least rewarding in some way.  When it’s not, it’s time for a holiday from it.

I’m taking October off.

I’ll see you back here in November with lots of knitting FOs and WIPs, and hopefully interesting things happening around Haarlem, Amsterdam, and elsewhere in the world.  I promise a photo with every post.  I hope that’s enough to bring you back again!

See you soon….

Just so you know, Andy is back to blogging, with a new web host, blogging software, and url:  www.andyinamsterdam.com.  We spent the afternoon setting everything up, and whew, it worked!  It’s going to take him some time to copy/paste all the old posts from (the evil and not to be trusted) Blogger, but I’m sure he’ll get there.  Welcome back Andy!

After Andy left I spent some time in the front garden, pulling weeds, watering the strawberry plants in pots and the flowers next to the door.  I moved some things around to make it a little nicer.  Finally I took a photo of the lovely tree rose, Snow White.  I planted it back in April and it’s doing so well!  It’s covered in buds and blooms.

It’s a 3 day weekend here in NL and the weather should be great for all 3 days (of course it goes back to COLD next week).  Tomorrow we go to Den Helder to visit the in-laws but Monday…. ah Monday, maybe the beach will call me again.  We’ll see.

I have been running this week, but I will wait and tell you about that in the official Sunday running blog post.

I do have a funny story to tell.  Last Wednesday night DB and I met up with a friend for drinks and dinner.  DB and P. met up earlier and I joined them after work.  We had a beer in a pub on the Nieuwemarkt, then, as we were getting ready to leave and go find a restaurant, P said “So, are you excited to go to Paris for your birthday?”

My mouth dropped open.  DB turned bright red.

It was supposed to be a surprise.

I knew that we were going somewhere for 4 days, but I didn’t know where and I wouldn’t know until my birthday.  I said, “but I didn’t KNOW!”  P. was really embarrassed, as he should have been, since he was told it was a surprise.  He just had a senior moment and spoke without thinking.  Ah well.  So!  I’m going to Paris for my birthday!  Nice, huh? :-)

…. of my vacation.  Sigh.  Bigger sigh.  It’s amazing how two weeks can just fly past as if it hardly happened.  Today is my last day off and tomorrow I go back to work.

When I first moved to NL I found it curious how Dutch people obsess over the weather.  They are constantly talking about the weather.  The most popular web site in NL is buienradar (rain radar).  But now that I’ve lived here for several years I understand it.  For example, yesterday I was planning to go to Amsterdam and visit the Monday Noordermarkt and see what crafty things were for sale.  Sunday afternoon I heard several times, from several sources, that Monday’s weather would be perfect, sunny and very warm.  Tuesday and Wednesday the weather would be lousy again.  Based on that information I changed my mind and instead of Amsterdam, DB and I went to the beach yesterday.  Boy am I glad we took advantage of the weather and time off and went when we could!  We went by bike of course, and arrived at the beach just before 10:00am, a very early hour, as you can tell.

Bloemendaal aan Zee

Bloemendaal aan Zee

There were a few joggers, a few horses and riders and just a couple of people making themselves comfortable.  The breeze was just a tiny bit chilly still, but it was so nice to be outside in the sun.  You know that NL is the most densely populated country in Europe, and even out here on a very quiet morning, it’s not entirely quiet.  We watched plane after plane appear as small dots from the west, coming in to land at Schiphol.  We imagined they were coming from California, from New York.  The ones staying high in the sky were surely heading to Berlin.  The planes taking off and staying low were going to London.  There were also a few freighters coming out of the Noordzeekanaal, heading out into the North Sea.  And one lonely fishing boat.

While on the beach I finished reading “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running” by Haruki Murakami.  It’s a nice little memoir and I enjoyed it very much.  It’s always interesting for a beginning runner (which I very much am) to read about how an experienced runner experiences running.  What does he think about?  How does he keep up the training and what does the running mean to him?  I think I gained as much insight into what it is to be a novelist as much as what it is to be a runner, and that they are not so dissimilar.

After hanging out for a while, and then having some lunch at one of the beach restaurants, we hopped on our bikes and decided to try a different route home.  We biked through the dunes, on a designated bike trail, between Parnassia and Santpoort Zuid.  It was beautiful!  It’s about a 12 km route and seemed to take no time at all to bike it.  I took a couple of photos along the way.

We saw these shaggy haired bovines in a few places along the route.  I think they are wild and you should really stay out of their way.

This the aptly named Vogelmeer (bird lake).  There were all kinds of water fowl here making big noise.

So, that was Monday morning and afternoon, in the sunshine and lovely weather.  We wore summer clothes.  I biked barefooted.  By Monday night, however, the weather changed dramatically.

Last night I went in to Amsterdam for SnB night.  It was another fun evening, as usual, although the group gets smaller as the weather gets better.  The die-hards were there.  When I left at 10pm it was still really warm and nice out.  When I got to the central station I got an sms from DB saying to look at buienradar on my iPhone and beware of what’s coming.  The big red storm monster was about to eat NL again!  Our train was delayed, but finally after changing tracks there was a train heading to Haarlem.  (I saw then that the next train to Haarlem was canceled.)  By the time we got to Haarlem the worst had passed over and only a slight rain and flooded streets were left.  I actually kind of like biking in this weather – it was still warm-ish and lightly raining.  When I got home I was pretty wet, but still in a good mood about it.

At 4am this morning we were woken up by a huge lightening and rain storm.  I thought I’d better go downstairs and unplug my computer because if it is fried in this lightening I’ll be SICK.  I thought about Andy and his blog trauma (more on that later).  The poor cat was sitting on a dining room chair, too afraid to come upstairs.  This morning when the alarm went off we heard on the radio about all the traffic delays due to downed trees and flooding, and also plenty of train delays.  I’m so happy this is still a vacation day for me.  We didn’t suffer any damage or hard feelings over the storm.  Even the little tree rose in the front of the house chose today to start blooming.  Silly thing.  It’s still cloudy and rainy today (Tuesday), so you see, you have to keep your eye on the weather report here in NL and always be prepared to change your plans to accommodate the weather.  You never know what you are going to get and when you’ll have a summer day again.

Now, about Andy and his blog.  If you read my blog you are sure to have come across the many times I’ve linked to my friend Andy’s blog.  It was (is?) on Blogger.  If you go there now you will get a very ugly message stating that his blog is spreading malware and terrible things will happen to you if you try to reach it.  Even if you try, you can’t.  It’s gone.  Poof.  Gone.  Andy is beside himself.  He’s done nothing to deserve this Google robot shut down.  He’s tried everything to find someone at Google who will help him but no luck.  Google’s robots have run amok and are shutting down, seemingly randomly, perfectly innocent blogs.  BEWARE!  If you are on Blogger, find a way to back up your blog regularly so you don’t loose everything, or just move your site somewhere more reliable.  This hasn’t happened only to Andy, but he’s found a lot of other people who have had this happen to them in the last month.  It’s scary if you are a blogger.  It reminds me that I have to manually back up my blog regularly and THEN back up my hard drive.  This is something I want to do today.

I usually read blogs via Google Reader.  When I heard about Andy’s blog problem I went there and discovered that in my cache, or somewhere, I could access 2 years worth of Andy’s blog posts and copy/paste them into a text file for him.  At least he has 2 years of blogging saved.  That’s how long I’ve been reading his blog, so that’s what I had.  He’s been blogging there since 2004.  Such a shame.  Well shame on Google for letting this happen and making it impossible to get any help about it.  You’ve been warned.

Notice anything different?

The blog has had an upgrade (to WordPress 2.7.1) and a face lift.  The bandages are not yet off, so there might be some more changes made in the next week or two.  It was just time for a change.

I found this theme here.  I’ve been searching for a new theme for a very long time and have been threatening to change the look and feel of this blog for months.  I finally made a firm decision – I will not start another knitting project until I change the blog.  Period.

I’m making steady progress on the Spina di Pesce sock, but frankly doing all my knitting on size 0 (2mm) needles and all twisted stitches is a) hard on my hands; and b) getting a little boring.  I want to start a second project with bigger needles and no twists.  Thus, today was the day to upgrade the blog.

The header images that are currently shown are not my own.  That I want to change by adding some NL specific images.  Since the header is wide and thin, it will take some time in Photoshop to create the images I want.  Stay tuned for that.

I’d love to hear any comments you might have about what you find nice on blogs.  What features do you like on other people’s blogs?  Any suggestions to make this one better?  OK, besides better writing and photos. :-)

The demolition of our bathroom has begun! Finally. We moved into this house in August and had planned to have the bathroom replaced right away. Here it is March and it’s just getting started. The whole project will take 3 1/2 to 4 weeks. Yes, without a shower. We have a second toilet downstairs, but we no longer have a shower. THIS, my friends, is going to be annoying.

This morning we got up early and drove to the gym where we half heartedly did a little work out and then made our way to the showers. Of course we were there for the showers but tried to at least do something that justified being at a gym. This will be our every-other-day routine for the next few weeks. Or go to a friend’s house for a shower. “Hi! Long time no see! Can we use your shower?”

This is a serious rebuild we have going on and had to call in professionals. This is no DIY project. As you will see in the following photos, the room no longer looks like a bathroom at all. It looks like a cave. A scary cave.

What are we having done?
Well, everything OUT first of all. Walls back bare brick.
Plumbing moved all around (so we don’t have to shower next to the window – what a stupid design that is).
Electrics added.
A new window frame and window put in (the old one didn’t fit well and was rotten).
The door turned around to open into the hall (to give more space to a very small bathroom).
And the biggest job – knock out an old chimney and reinforce the ceiling so the house doesn’t fall down.
And then the easy part – plaster, tile, shower, toilet and fixtures.

It will be beautiful when it’s done.

Here is a before photo.  Notice the rusted radiator (that didn’t work) and the also non-working shower head.

The demolition begins:

Here’s the chimney, only partly taken out:

And a day later the chimney is gone and the new window is in.  The floor is also gone.

The house at this moment is a small disaster area.  There’s cardboard covering the entryway, stairs and landing upstairs.  There’s DUST EVERYWHERE.  You can’t keep up with it.  Saturday we will clean everything.  We hope that by Saturday all of the dusty work is done.

I had big plans to upgrade my blog software (to WordPress 2.7) and set up a new theme.  Uh-huh.  I think house cleaning will take all priority Saturday.  The blog will have to keep churning without an upgrade again this week.

Last night I was checking the ol’ blog and could not reach my site!  This happens far too often with my web host.  I sent an email to complain again.  The best thing about my host is the really personal service you get.  They always reply with a personal email from a real person with a name within minutes of you sending them one.  They have now moved my site to a different server (an upgrade to my account?).  Hopefully I’ll have far less down time.  If I just happen to notice down time, by chance, I can’t imagine how often it really is down for the world.  Shocking! :-)

I’ll keep the bathroom project updated on the blog and post photos as things move along.  Maybe all the trips to the gym for showers will pay off and I’ll lose a little weight.  Wouldn’t that be a nice side benefit to all this hassle!
