Happy 40th

This weekend is PinkPop‘s 40th edition.  Forty years!  I wonder what those first years were like.  This year we have fewer bands being shown live on tv.  There’s 3voor12 streaming live, but it’s not the same as being able to watch music on a big screen tv.

Who’s playing?  The most well known list includes Bruce Springsteen, Placebo, Amy McDonald, Madness, Elbow, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand.  Check out the list here if you’re curious who else is on the program.

I’ve never been to PinkPop.  But I have been to Werchter and LowLands.  I met my DB at Werchter in 2002.  Everyone say “ahhhhhh how sweet”.

If I had been a teenager in NL I would have been in music heaven.  Can you imagine?  Teenagers are normally allowed to go to these festivals and within a 200 mile radius of Amsterdam there are 4 major festivals every summer!  This year, for the first time, we’re going to local festival #4, PukkelPop.  PukkelPop and Werchter are both in Belgium, which, if you are an American and are used to driving distances, is still in the neighborhood.

Yes, I’m one of the oldest people at these festivals, but so what?  I still have a great time.  You’ve read it here before:  I’m a sucker for live music.  And this is a great country to live in if you are the same.  Do the free networks show music festivals on tv in the U.S.?  Not that I remember.  And even in NL, when Glastonbury is on in the UK, we get to watch the live coverage on the BBC!  We get BBC1,2,3,4 here.

Anyway, concert season has begun and I’m going back to watching it on tv, knitting in hand.  What a great way to spend the day!

As a teenager I’ve been to Pinkpop 3 times and saw people like, Peter Tosh, Police, The Kinks, Cure, Waterboys and so on. And it was really great!!

I was lucky enough to get tickets for Pinkpop’s Saturday and see me great hero Bruce! It was great, the Killers played just before Bruce did on the mainstage. They were pretty okay, but for me Bruce will always be The Boss 🙂

As a teenager I was there every year, but still prefer Lowlands… Pukkelpop is fun! And Werchter too. You should try Roskilde in Denmark, that’s one of the best. I think.
